Covid-19 may survive 28 days on banknotes and payment cards

New research suggests virus can survive for an extended period of time at room temperature

The virus responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic can survive for 28 days on bank cards, mobile phone screens and banknotes, according to a new study.

Research from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, found the Sars-Cov-2 virus tended to survive longer at lower temperatures as well as on “non-porous or smooth” surfaces. This would include the glass found in smart phone screens and the plastic of payment cards.

However, the virus tends to survive longer on paper
