Indonesia to launch new banknote and coin series with a ‘bang’

New currency series to arrive later this year

Bank Indonesia has unveiled plans for a new series of banknotes and coins, honouring 12 "national heroes" of the state.

On September 15, the president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, decreed national heroes should feature on the new series.

The governor of the central bank, Agus Martowardojo, has since chosen four individuals to appear on the coins (the 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 rupiah) and eight for the banknotes (1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, and 100,000 rupiah), with two on the
