Knot becomes ‘cautious believer’ in euro internationalisation

DNB chief says EU’s institutions must be robust and its finances sustainable if it’s to attract investors

Klaas Knot, president of the Netherlands Bank, has shifted from being agnostic to having a more positive position about the euro’s role in international finance.

Speaking at the Peterson Institute for International Economics on April 23, he said boosting the euro’s international role could not be a “standalone policy target”, but it would still be a net positive for Europeans.

“It usually takes a crisis to dethrone a world currency,” Knot said, adding that it was “only natural for reserve managers
