The evolving structure of the Chinese economy is an important factor in understanding the slowdown in global trade, according to Federal Reserve governor Jerome Powell.

Speaking at the San Francisco Fed on November 18, Powell cited factors including weakening global growth, a decline in the pace of trade liberalisation, and the "maturation" of global value chains as important elements of the story.
