Monetary policy affects US current account

Loose monetary policy plays an important role in the United States current-account deficit, research from the European Central Bank finds.

The research suggests that the surge in oil prices cannot, as often argued, entirely explain the deterioration of the US current account deficit. They find that expansionary monetary policy shocks as well as positive private absorption shocks are the main drivers.
