A clear division of opinion and sentiment about the prospects for the world economy came to the surface at a conference on Global Government Bonds that took place this week in Hong Kong.

Whereas many of the officials and economists from Asia who spoke at the conference were nervous about prospects in view of the unprecedented build up of international payment imbalances, this pessimism was countered by the optimism of powerful group of officials and economists from Europe
