Growth accelerated to 5.8% in 2006, boosted by the launch of commercial oil operations.

The oil sector accounted for a 3.3% surge in GDP. The strong performances of the wholesale/ retail trade and tourism industries led to a fall in unemployment from 11% to 9.4%.

However, the growth of the non-oil sector slowed to 2.5% as activity in the primary sector fell because of the impact of bad weather, disease and cyclical factors on agriculture and the effect of financial difficulties in the farmed
