Philip Lowe picked as next RBA governor

Deputy governor Lowe will succeed Glenn Stevens, who says there is “no-one better qualified” to lead the Reserve Bank of Australia

Philip Lowe will be the next governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), it was announced today (May 5). He will begin his seven-year term on September 18, after Glenn Stevens stands down.

Lowe, who has served as deputy governor since 2012, has spent more than three decades at the RBA. Stevens described his appointment as "superb", saying there was "no-one better qualified" to succeed him.

The government also appointed Ian Harper to the nine-person board. He will join as a non-executive
