RBA mulls creation of repo CCP

CCP could provide many benefits, but would need to be commercially viable

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has raised the possibility of establishing a central counterparty (CCP) in Australia to clear repos, but remains unconvinced as to whether the benefits would outweigh the costs.

A consultation paper published today sets out the case for and against filling the current tri-party repo void in the country, but says the central bank will only form an opinion in light of the feedback. As counterparty to around a third of outstanding repos in Australia, the RBA has
