Cyprus names auditor-general as new central bank governor

President Anastasiades calls Mario Draghi to inform him of the appointment

The Cypriot auditor-general Chrystalla Georghadji was named as the new governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus today, following the resignation of Panicos Demetriades earlier this week.

President Nicos Anastasiades unveiled the move in a short statement, adding that he had telephoned European Central Bank (ECB) president Mario Draghi to inform him of his decision.

The ECB has not commented on Demetriades' departure, but Draghi is likely to take a keen interest in the situation after intervening
