New deputy governor takes office at RBI

The empty space on the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) governing board has been filled, with the Indian government choosing Urjit Patel to take on the role.

Patel starts at the central bank today (January 14), having been appointed for a three-year term. He takes responsibility for most of the departments overseen by his predecessor, Subir Gokarn, including monetary policy, financial markets, economic and statistical research and communication.
