Twenty-three academics on Monday added their voice to the chorus criticising the Federal Open Market Committee's pledge to buy $600 billion in Treasury bonds by June next year.

In a letter to the Wall Street Journal, the 23 said: "We believe that the Federal Reserve's large-scale asset purchase plan should be reconsidered and discontinued.
