Britain probably better off in euro says Trichet

Speaking at a conference in Berlin on Saturday 19 November, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said Britain would probably be even better off if it joined the euro.

Trichet rejected comments from a questioner who suggested Britain had been successful because it had remained outside the euro. The ECB chief noted that Ireland - a member of the euro - was now richer than Britain in terms of gross domestic product per capita.
