Trichet will 'fiercely' defend ECB independence

European Central Bank president Jean-Claude Trichet told the European Parliament on Wednesday 21 June that he will "fiercely" defend the independence of the ECB.

Asked about euro group president Jean-Claude Juncker's proposal for closer cooperation between the euro group and the ECB, Trichet told the European Parliament economic and monetary committee: "I will always fiercely defend and preserve the independence of our institution."

The euro group president is invited to attend the fortnightly ECB
