Counterfeit euro notes rises in 2nd half 2003

The ECB said on Thursday 22 January that a total of 311,925 counterfeit euro banknotes were removed from circulation in the second half of 2003, an increase of 30 percent on the first half.

The total number of counterfeits removed from circulation during the whole year (551,287) was about 20% lower than the total number of counterfeits of the legacy currencies reported by the euro area national central banks in 2001.
