Fed chief rules out mandate change

Ben Bernanke said he doesn't want Congress to change the Federal Reserve's mandate that it pay attention to both price stability and maximum employment or economic growth.

Some analysts have argued that Bernanke's project to introduce a formal inflation target at the Fed would force Congress to reduce the mandate to focus on the single goal of stable prices.
