ECB rate cut still not an option says Trichet

European Central Bank president Jean-Claude Trichet ruled out a cut in ECB interest rates on Wednesday 4 May in response to the recent slowdown in euro zone growth. Trichet was speaking at the ECB's press conference after euro zone interest rates were left unchanged.

He said a rate cut is still not an option for the ECB governing council, because it would lead to a rise in inflation expectations and therefore push market interest rates higher, which would ultimately be negative for growth.
