Kuchma sacks Ukraine's central bank chairman

Meeting at an undisclosed location, President Leonid Kuchma's supporters voted to replace the chairman of the central bank Volodymyr Stelmakh and 19 parliamentary committees on Tuesday. The past couple of weeks have seen several attempts to oust Stelmakh from his post.

Mr Stelmakh was replaced by Sergey Tyhypko, head of one of the three largest factions in the pro-Kuchma coalition.

Parliament earlier on Tuesday agreed to give control of the distribution and counting of ballots to pro-Kuchma lea
