Regulator slams calls for IMF supervisory role

A senior European regulator has launched a scathing attack on politicians' calls for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to take a leading role in supervising the global economy.

The unnamed senior European financial market supervisor told Klaus C Engelen, a journalist for Handelsblatt, a German daily newspaper, in an article appearing in Monday's edition that the politicians' calls represented an "opportunistic power grab."

"If anyone believes that politicians have stability objectives in
