European Central Bank (ECB) vice president Lucas Papademos will replace Otmar Issing as chief economist in May, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported, citing unnamed sources close to the bank.
"Everything points to Papademos," the newspaper cited the sources as saying.
Issing's eight-year term ends in May this year.
A spokesman for the ECB declined to comment on the report, AFX News said.
