Jordanian members of parliament have signed a petition urging Prime Minister Ali Abulragheb to fire the central bank of Jordan's Governor Umayya Touqan for freezing all bank accounts belonging to six leaders of the Palestinian Hamas Organization and six Palestinian charitable societies earlier this month, parliamentarians said Thursday.

The lawmakers, who represent two thirds of the lower house's members, contend that the decision had been taken "in response to U.S. arrogance which seeks to frustrate all attempts of Arab rebirth".

"Therefore, the central bank governor should be fired because he injured Jordan's reputation," the deputies said.

The government said Tuesday that it had ordered Touqan's instructions be cancelled and rebuked him for not "informing the cabinet" beforehand.
