Duisenberg 'stands in' for the euro at awards

GERMANY - An awards ceremony, whose previous winners include Tony Blair and Helmut Kohl, gave Wim Duisenberg a chance to prove he is not just a self-effacing, mop-haired central banker, said the FT on Thursday.

The European Central Bank president was in Aachen, Germany, today to receive the annual international Charlemagne prize.

Previous winners, judged to have fostered understanding and closer co-operation in Europe, include Francois Mitterrand, Helmut Kohl and even Britain's Tony Blair.
