Mexico's Ortiz says economy in good shape

Guillermo Ortiz, the governor of the Bank of Mexico, said on Thursday 5 October that Mexico's economy is better prepared than in the past to weather any U.S. slowdown as a growing number of consumers have access to credit.

Ortiz rejected concerns that lower growth in the United States could push Mexico into a recession as it did in early 2001, saying strong consumer spending and a vibrant construction sector would cushion the blow of softer U.S. demand for Mexican exports.
