New NBP chief nominated

Poland's president on Wednesday 3 January nominated Slawomir Skrzypek, acting president of a major Polish bank, as the next head of the National Bank of Poland.

Skrzypek, 42, had no background in monetary policy or banking before his appointment to the board of the state-dominated Bank PKO BP in December 2005. He is currently the bank's acting president.

The nomination comes after economist Jan Sulmicki withdrew his candidacy in mid-December less than two days after being nominated to head the bank.

Skrzypek is a U.S.-trained MBA with a background in public administration and auditing and a trusted and longtime colleague of President Lech Kaczynski.

If confirmed by parliament, Skrzypek would succeed Leszek Balcerowicz, whose six-year term expires 10 January.
