Poland's Walesa: EU membership of limited value

Lech Walesa has said European Union membership has failed to improve living standards enough or increase the nation's influence in EU policymaking.

``I am both happy and extremely unhappy,'' Walesa said in an interview Aug. 12 in Gdansk, Poland. ``Happy because we have a free country and freedom of choice. Communism is gone and numerous opportunities are now open to us. However, I am not happy with how the free country looks and with its position in the EU.''

``Domestic politics clearly hasn't
