ECB's Constancio says rates still low

European Central Bank governing council member Vitor Constancio said Wednesday 4 April that eurozone interest rates are still at historically low levels despite seven ECB rate hikes since December 2005.

"In real terms, interest rates remain low," Constancio said.

Constancio, who is also the governor of the Bank of Portugal, was addressing the Portuguese parliament's budget and finance committee.

In his remarks Constancio reiterated that the ECB's central mandate is to maintain price stability
