Bangladesh names former BB chief as caretaker head

Bangladesh's President Iajuddin Ahmed on Friday 12 January named former central bank governor Fakhruddin Ahmed to succeed him as the chief of an interim administration charged with holding elections, officials said.

Iajuddin resigned as the caretaker chief late on Thursday following months of violence and criticism that he had failed to create conditions for a free and impartial election.

The election previously scheduled for Jan. 22 has been postponed. No new date has yet been announced.
