Poll shows UK public would defy gov't euro support

UK - Public opinion would remain opposed to Britain joining the euro - even if the government recommended it, according to the latest opinion poll from NOP.

The poll, commissioned by Barclays Capital, underlines the political difficulties the government would face were it to try to join the single currency in the near future.

Speculation has grown that the Treasury's economic assessment of euro entry, due by next June, will put off a referendum until after the next election.
