Some central banks expect CBDC to boost seigniorage
Result depends on design features of digital currency, with many central banks unsure of the outcome
Some central banks expect issuance of central bank digital currency to boost seigniorage revenues, though the effect is likely to depend on design choices, respondents to the Fintech Benchmarks 2026 say.
Twenty-three central banks shared their views on the likely impact of CBDC on seigniorage. Five (21.7%) expect an increase in revenues, while no respondent predicts a decrease. However, the majority either expect no impact (39.1%) or are unsure (39.1%).
