Working group minutes: central banks seek cash cycle efficiencies

Some EME institutions are restructuring operations and promoting digital payment methods

Central banks from emerging market economies (EMEs) are looking for ways to cut the cost of distributing cash, which is often a significant logistical challenge.

Most of the participants who attended Central Banking’s latest interbank working group, on access to cash, said they were keen to promote electronic payments in a bid to reduce the volumes of cash circulating in the economy. Some had also restructured their cash operations to generate savings.

A central banker from an African country said
