Australia tightens interest rates to 15-year high

RBA’s fourth hike of 2026 targets inflation as governor says further increases are on the table

The Reserve Bank of Australia has tightened policy by 25 basis points in its fourth hike this year as it tries to reduce inflation, which remains about one percentage point above target.

RBA governor Michele Bullock said today (September 29) that the central bank had decided to increase the benchmark interest rate to 4.6%, its highest level in 15 years. “Today’s increase in interest rates is needed to slow the economy and bring inflation back to target,” she said at a press conference following
