Powell fact-checks Trump during tour of Fed building

Central bank chair rebuts claim that renovation was $600 million higher than previously reported

Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell fact-checked Donald Trump on July 24 during the US president’s visit to the central bank’s headquarters in Washington DC.  

Trump in recent weeks has criticised cost overruns on the project to renovate the US central bank’s headquarters. During his visit, he said he saw “a very luxurious situation taking place”.  

Before the tour the president had posted on his Truth Social platform that the renovation project had cost $3.1 billion – $600m more than the previous
