Bank of Korea stops handling overseas cash as coronavirus spreads

Central bank says it will not accept cash from abroad until further notice

Virus

The Bank of Korea announced it will no longer be accepting banknotes and coins from overseas, in an attempt to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

In a notice on its website, the central bank said it would no longer be accepting cash “introduced from abroad” until further notice. The central bank has also closed its currency museum as a precaution.

It is unclear if the Bank of Korea has plans to treat or replace banknotes and coins that may be carrying the virus.

The People’s Bank of China has asked banks to disinfect circulating cash in certain provinces. This involves putting banknotes through a sterilisation process before they can go back into circulation.

On January 20, 2020, the first case of the virus was confirmed in South Korea, according to information from Korea’s Center for Disease Control. As of February 19, 51 people had tested positive for the infection. While 35 remain in quarantine, 16 have been discharged.
