Selection process criticised for failing to promote diversity among top Fed officials
John Williams, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, is widely rumoured to be the leading contender to succeed William Dudley at the helm of the New York Fed this summer, but his candidacy has drawn criticism from some quarters.
Williams’ academic and professional career follows a similar trajectory to most Fed governors and chairs in recent decades. He holds a PhD in economics from Stanford University, and first joined the Federal Reserve System as economist at the Board
