Thai governor stresses value of independence

Comments follow the establishment of a ruling military junta in Thailand

Prasarn Trairatvorakul, the governor of the Bank of Thailand, stressed the value of the central bank's operational independence last week, as he called on the new government to maintain the separation of politics and monetary policy.

Prasarn told an audience at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand that the central bank's monetary policy committee was able to maintain its credibility and adhere to its mandate on account of its operational independence.
