Trichet emphasises lack of confidence

Jean-Claude Trichet, the president of the European Central Bank, has claimed the role of policymakers in this stage of the crisis is to restore confidence.

Speaking at an economic forum in New York organised by Chatham House, Trichet said: "The scarcest resource we have right now is confidence in the future." He said the "primary goal" of public-sector authorities at this point in the crisis "should be to strengthen confidence at all levels."
