Trichet endorses rate hike expectations

European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet on Thursday 12 October again endorsed market expectations of a further hike in euro zone interest rates by the end of the year.

Trichet told a news conference that he does not want to contradict market expectations for interest rates this year.

'We will do what is necessary to guarantee price stability,' he said.

Trichet was speaking after a seminar between the ECB, eurozone national central banks and the Bank of Russia.
