Norges Bank looks to narrow down CBDC options

Project enters third phase as central bank prepares recommendation on specifics of CBDC design

Norges Bank’s work on central bank digital currency (CBDC) has entered its third phase, as the central bank prepares to recommend next steps on the CBDC design process.

The Norwegian central bank has yet to formally commit to issuing a CBDC, but is now moving closer to concrete design choices. The current phase of work should culminate in the first quarter of 2021, when staff will brief the executive board on whether they think the central bank should pursue a particular CBDC design for further
