Bank of Canada looking at inequality, governor says

Monetary policy review is considering impact on wealth and income inequality, says Tiff Macklem

The Bank of Canada could place more emphasis on inequality as a result of its ongoing framework review, governor Tiff Macklem said on September 10.

The central bank’s monetary policy framework is up for review next year. As part of this process, the Bank of Canada is conducting a “horse race” between different possible frameworks. It is looking at standard criteria such as inflation, growth and employment, but also at how different frameworks affect wealth and income inequality.
