Colombia holds rates in surprise move

Banrep says Middle East conflict and El Niño could intensify inflationary pressures

The Central Bank of Colombia (Banrep) kept its benchmark rate steady at 12% in a split decision.

On July 31, four directors on Banrep’s board voted for a pause while three opted for a hike of 50 basis points. In a statement following the decision, the central bank said holding rates steady would maintain a “restrictive monetary policy” consistent with expectations of a downward inflation trajectory in 2027.
