ECB holds rates at 2.25% in line with expectations

Lagarde says second-round inflation effects have yet to show up in data

The European Central Bank’s governing council has held rates following its monetary policy meeting on July 22–23.

ECB president Christine Lagarde presented the council’s unanimous decision today (July 23), noting that some Eurosystem central bank governors did “ask themselves” about whether a further rate hike was appropriate. The decision was largely in line with expectations, with markets anticipating a hike at the council’s next meeting on September 10.
