Hungary cuts by 25bp, signals more easing to come

Central bank says households’ inflation expectations have declined ‘significantly’ in recent months

The Central Bank of Hungary (MNB) has cut its policy rate by 25 basis points to 6% in a decision that the governor, Mihály Varga, said had been “not unanimous”.

At the press conference announcing the decision today (June 23), Varga said annual inflation figures and inflation expectations had declined “significantly” over recent months, though firms’ outlooks had become gloomier since the start of the Iran war. Headline inflation fell from 2.1% in April to 1.8% in May, while core inflation fell
