US inflation and monetary policy at ‘crossroads’ – Waller

Fed governor says FOMC must be ready to prevent repeat of post-Covid inflation

Federal Reserve governor Christopher Waller has said the US central bank may need to raise rates in the near term if upcoming core inflation figures are too high.

“If we get another hot reading on core inflation this week, then the FOMC [Federal Open Market Committee] will need to consider tightening monetary policy in the near term,” Waller said at an event in New York on July 13. The policy-maker said that although the real economy was in “good shape”, he believed inflation and monetary policy
