IMF’s Georgieva sees value in ‘waiting and watching’

Central banks should ‘step in firmly with rate hikes’ if expectations de-anchor, MD says

A “waiting and watching” approach to the supply shock stemming from the conflict in Middle East is warranted for now, but policy-makers must remain vigilant, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund has said.

In a curtain-raiser speech on April 9 ahead of next week’s IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, Kristalina Georgieva said the US-Israeli war with Iran had caused a “large”, “global” and “asymmetric” supply shock.
