Goolsbee backs Powell and raises tariff concerns

Chicago Fed chief says tampering with independence increases inflation risks

Austan Goolsbee, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, defended Fed chair Jerome Powell in comments on January 14.

“If we’re going to get into a circumstance where the independence or even the integrity of chair Powell is in question, we’re in a bad spot,” he warned.

His comments, made in an interview with NPR, came amid the US Department of Justice’s legal investigation of Powell.

“The independence of the Fed couldn’t be more important for the long-run inflation rate in this country,”
