Give BoJ policy space to fight inflation, says Bessent

US Treasury secretary hints at preference for rate hikes before Japan’s central bank meets

Scott Bessent has called on Japan’s government to allow the country’s central bank to combat inflation, just as its rate-setters convene for a policy decision.

The US Treasury secretary met with his Japanese counterpart, Satsuki Katayama, on October 27 in Tokyo as part of the US administration’s trip to Asia.

Writing on social media a day after the meeting, Bessent said he was encouraged by Katayama’s “deep understanding” of how Japanese economic policy had moved to one that “must balance growth
