Inflation rises in Germany and France

German statistical office says energy price rise partly driven by base effects from earlier subsidy

Inflation rose last month in France and Germany, the eurozone’s two largest economies, according to preliminary figures released today (January 4). 

The French statistical agency, Insee, estimated the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) had risen 4.1% in December, compared with 3.9% in November. Insee said the rise had been driven by rises in the prices of energy and services.
