Italian prime minister says ECB policies are ‘making things worse’

Government ministers warn of difficulties for Italian sovereign bonds

Italy’s prime minister said the European Central Bank should “stop making choices that make things worse” and improve its communications.

Meloni made her comments at an extended press conference on December 29, Reuters reported. She became prime minister on October 22, leading a coalition government.

The prime minister appeared to hint that the ECB’s monetary tightening could cause problems for Italy on sovereign bond markets. “It would be useful if the ECB handled its communication well,”
