Fed’s Waller believes US economy can handle several more rate hikes

Governor acknowledges uncertainties remain high amid Russian invasion of Ukraine

US Federal Reserve governor Christopher Waller argued the US economy can cope with several more rate hikes without suffering a sharp rise in unemployment.

“I support tightening policy by another 50 basis points for several meetings,” said Waller. “In particular, I am not taking 50bp hikes off the table until I see inflation coming down closer to our 2% target.”

Waller expects job vacancies to fall amid the cooling economy. He also expects unemployment to rise modestly. “I am left optimistic
