Schnabel takes on Germany’s ‘false narratives’ on ECB policy

Criticism based on “half-truths” imperils trust in single monetary policy and “undermines European cohesion”

German critics of the European Central Bank resort to “half-truths” that imperil the credibility of the institution and, ultimately, European cohesion, said Isabel Schnabel on February 11.

In a speech in Karlsruhe before the German Legal Research Society, the member of the ECB’s executive board warned the attacks the central bank receives in her home country are unwarranted based on the track record of the institution. Schnabel, who joined the ECB last month, is the first German ECB official
